Spring Season Preview

Stevenson, MD - The men's tennis team enters the spring season ready to face new challenges. After coming off consecutive NEAC Championships the men's team faces tough competition in its new conference, the Capital Athletic Conference. The past two years have been spectacular for the team as they have gone 11-5 and 12-3 while not losing a conference match during the regular season. However this year's team has a different identity than previous years.

VJC's #1 singles player from last year Jason Cohen has graduated along with #4 Doug Ammon and Mike Casalena. Despite the loss of a four year #1 player, the Mustangs will be very talented at the top with Ryan Morse and Ryan Woodring fighting for the top spot. Also returning are NEAC Champions Matt Kondilas and Korey Garner. VJC also welcomes freshman Kevin Stamm, Marc Allinson and Randy Speck who will be making an immediate impact into the lineup. Add in Ben Petasky who is a transfer from Florida Atlantic and Towson and this team has the talent to be as successful as it has been in previous years.

Villa Julie also welcomes a new head coach into the program this year. Former #1 and team captain Jason Cohen takes over for Jeb Barber who left Villa Julie to become the head basketball coach at Gallaudet University. Jason brings a lot of experience at the collegiate level after having set records for the most singles and doubles wins in school history last year. He was a three year captain of the team and four year MVP. Jason learned a lot from Jeb during his time playing for him and now hopes to continue on the success Jeb was able to have with the program.

As previously mentioned this year VJC faces a much tougher schedule. They start the season off at Hilton Head, SC for their annual spring break trip, playing five matches while they are down there. As soon as they return the competition picks up as they face #11 Johns Hopkins, #12 University of Mary Washington and Salisbury who is ranked #10 regionally. Add in other talented teams in the region such as York, Elizabethtown and a match against cross town rival Goucher on Senior Day and this will be one of the toughest schedules in VJC history. The team definitely feels up to the challenges and enjoys the tough competition that they will face this year.
