Gophers Escape with Win on Senior Day
Stevenson, MD - The Mustangs took on cross town rival Goucher College on Friday on Senior Day for two of the Mustangs. Matt Kondilas and Ryan Woodring went out in style, playing in their last collegiate match for Villa Julie. VJC started off in their usual manner dropping all 3 doubles matches to put them behind. Then thanks to the play of the seniors the Mustangs roared back into the match. Both Matt and Ryan finished off their opponents easily in straight sets along with freshman Kevin Stamm to level the score at 3 all. Meanwhile Korey Garner was battling at #2 singles as he had to step up in the absence of regular #2 Marc Allinson due to injury. Korey played a great match but fell in a third set tie-breaker. The match came down to #5 & #6. Ben Petasky came through at #5 in three sets to even the match at 4-4. Randy Speck saved 2 match points in the 2nd set and 3 more in the third set before falling in another 3rd set tiebreaker. It was a thrilling end to an exciting last match of the year and a great way to send the seniors off.
