WINCHESTER, Va. - Sophomore Andre Sturniolo won his 10th straight match in leading the Stevenson men's tennis team to a 5-4 victory over non-conference opponent Shenandoah. With the win, the Mustangs are now 9-5 overall.
Sturniolo moved his singles record to 10-1 after defeating his No. 2 opponent in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-3. Earlier in the day, Sturniolo and junior Douglas Vaughan won the lone doubles match for the Mustangs by a 9-8 (9-7) score. Vaughan and Sturniolo are now 6-1 in No. 2 doubles play.
Junior Andrew Ryan also won his 10th straight, taking his No. 4 match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. The win improves Ryan's record to 14-3.
Vaughan improved his record to 9-7 after dominating his No. 5 singles opponent, 6-1, 6-1.
Freshman Richie Abruscato took down his No. 6 opponent by a 6-3, 6-3 score for his fifth-straight victory. Abruscato is now 10-3 on the year.
Sophomore Ray McDermott lost a hard-fought match in No. 1 singles by a 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 margin.
The Mustangs (9-5, 3-1 MAC) return to MAC Commonwealth play in a home match against Hood on Tuesday, April 17. The match begins at 3:00 pm on the Greenspring courts.
