Men's Tennis Opens Up Fall Campaign with 8-1 Win Over Catholic

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Stevenson men's tennis team opened up its fall season with an 8-1 victory over host Catholic. The win was the program's first regular season victory over the Cardinals.

The Mustangs opened up the day by taking all three doubles matches. 

Senior Wornden Ly and junior Ray McDermott dropped their No. 1 opponents by an 8-5 score, while senior Douglas Vaughan and junior Andre Sturniolo won their No. 2 match, 8-6. Vaughan and Sturniolo have won 10 of their last 11 matches dating back to last season. 

Junior Drew Ryan and senior Alex Kiblin triumphed in their No. 3 match by an 8-4 score.  

In singles play, McDermott took his No. 1 match in three sets by a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 score, while Sturniolo dominated his No. 2 opponent in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Sturniolo has 17-straight victories dating back to last season. 

Ryan and Vaughan won their No. 4 and No. 5 matches in straight sets, while Abruscato won his match in three by a 6-3, 6-7(2), 10-4 score. 

The Mustangs (1-0) compete next in the three-day ITA Tournament hosted by Mary Washington starting on Thursday, September 27.
