2007 Season Preview

The Men's volleyball team is optimistic about the season this
year coming off of their first appearance in the NECVA finals last
year. JR Jackson (Havre de Grace, MD/ Havre
de Grace), Alex Ness (Jarrettsville, MD/ North
Harford), and Zach Drew (Baltimore, MD/ Loyola
Blakefield) return with the same outstanding power that placed the
team in the top ten power hitters in DIII last year.
Joe Tagye (Quakertown, PA/ Quakertown) ran
opposite last year as well as middle but will pick up some or all
of the setting duties this year. Steve
Grossnickle (Perry Hall, MD/ Calvert Hall) returns to sure
up the passing and back row play as the incumbent libero.
Jason Gierzcak (Essex, MD/ Mt. Carmel) and
Maksim Leychenko (Owings Mills, MD) return as
all-purpose players gaining experience last year mainly in the back
row.
New to VJC are buddies Ryan McDowell (6'5") and
David Lloyd (6'3"), both from Seneca Valley High
school and the Maryland Volleyball Club. These are two
outstanding players who will add experience and power to the
team. David will share some of the setting
duties as well as playing opposite; while Ryan
will sure-up the middle along with Ness .
Ryan is a monster as a blocker and has already
begun to frustrate our own hitters.
Ben Leatherman (Glen Arm, MD/ Calvert Hall) and
Brett Keller (Perry Hall, MD/ Loyola Blakefield)
also join the team as freshman after competing in the MIAA for
Calvert Hall and Loyola respectively.
Brett is a quick, high jumping outside
hitter and Ben hopes to dethrone Grossnicle as the defensive
specialist. First year player Zach Canfield
(Baldwin, MD/ Open Bible Christian Academy) rounds out the squad as
a back-up middle and defensive specialist.
