Mustangs Compete In York College Mens Volleyball Invitational
Jamaica, NY - Villa Julie traveled to Jamiaca New York to participate in the York tournament against Sacred Heart (DI), Hunter, CCNY and Host York. The first match ended in a loss 0-3 to eventual tournanment winners Sacred Heart University. The team reved up to play Hunter Saturday morning at 9:00 but fell short (0-3), leaving them 0-2 going into their final 2 games.
At 11:00 the Mustangs took on host York and had outstanding performances from middles Alex Ness (7 kills, .666) and Ryan McDowell (12 kills, .648) assisted by John Hall (31 assists, 8 digs). David LLoyd came alive in games 4 and 5 as well to post 18 kills and 21 digs. Villa grabbed a resounding win, beating York in three games.
In the final match, CCNY posted 92 digs to frustrate the Mustangs through the first 3 games to put them down 1-2. Setter Anthony Cammarata (49 assists, 24 digs) led the offense as the setter for game four and fed All-Tournanment player JR Jackson (24 kills, .306) and Steve Grossnickle (11 kills, 18 digs) force the match to 5 games. David LLoyd came alive in games 4 and 5 as well to post 18 kills and 21 digs. In the fifth game, the Mustang defense proved too much for CCNY, with the Mustangs prevailing in a five game thriller. In all, the Mustangs posted a school record 113 digs through five games to complement 14 blocks led by Ryan McDowell (2 solo, 7 assisted)
The Mustangs are now 15-14 and travel in two weeks to Eastern Mennonite University for the Necva West Crossover. The Mustangs need at least one win and a little luck to propel them into the NECVA finals. All three teams (Medaille, Nazareth, and Dyouville) are ranked in the top 15 in the NECVA.
