Wisener's 15 Kills, Six Blocks Lead Mustangs Over Cairn in Home Opener
OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson men's volleyball sophomore Kyle Wisener (York, Pa./Central York) totaled 15 kills and six total blocks while junior Austin Jacoby (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) also added 15 kills as the Mustangs defeated Cairn in a non-conference contest Saturday at Owings Mills Gymnasium, 25-22, 23-25, 25-23, 28-26.
The win was the sixth in the last seven home openers for Stevenson (2-1) and the first at home for first-year head coach Joe Tagye.
The Mustangs, who were receiving votes in Tuesday's AVCA Division III Men's Top 15 Poll, never trailed in the first set, jumping out to a 5-0 lead. The Highlanders (2-4) pulled within one at 23-22, but back-to-back kills by junior Jon Martin (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) and freshman Patrick Schuyler (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) gave Stevenson a 1-0 lead.
The second set featured 12 ties and six lead changes, the last of which came at 23-23 when back-to-back kills by Cairn's Ryan Garven tied the game at 1-1. After a .312 hitting percentage in the opening set, the Mustangs hit just .194 in the second while committing three service errors.
Stevenson led 10-7 in the third set and again by three at 17-14 and 18-15, but the Highlanders rallied behind two kills from Noah Pricket and two Mustang errors to tie the set at 21-21. Holding match point and serving at 24-22, a Stevenson service error pulled Cairn back within one before an attack error by Prickett gave the Mustangs a 2-1 advantage.
Prickett totaled six of his team's 15 kills in the set while Stevenson totaled six service errors.
Prickett added 10 more kills in the fourth set as the two teams battled through 16 ties and six lead changes. Cairn led 9-6 and 12-9 before the Mustangs tied it at 12-12. Tied at 22-22, Stevenson held game point at 24-22 before back-to-back kills by Prickett tied the set for the 14th time at 24-24.
Both teams combined for five set points until the Mustangs edged out the two-point victory after two-straight attack errors by Prickett and Josh Tuttle.
Wisner totaled six of his 15 kills in the deciding fourth set while hitting .500 and adding two block assists. Jacoby added five kills as the two combined for 11 of Stevenson's 16.
Jacoby had 13 digs to go along with his 15 kills while Martin finished with 10 kills and 10 digs. Junior Adam Thatcher (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) had a team-high 15 digs and sophomore David Moler (York, Pa./Central York), who left the game in the second set with an ankle injury before returning in the third, finished with 49 assists and four block assists.
Prickett had game-high 21 kills and added 13 digs for the Highlanders. Garven had 12 kills and 14 digs.
Stevenson will play its next 15 consecutive contests away from home beginning next Saturday, February 9 when the Mustangs face No. 2-ranked Carthage at Thiel in a CVC Crossover. Game time is at 2:00 p.m.
