No. 9 Mustangs Win a Pair of Five-Set Games Versus Thiel, Host Cairn

LANGHORNE, Pa. - Led by 32 kills and 40 digs from junior Jon Martin (Lititz, Pa./Warwick), the No. 9-ranked Stevenson men's volleyball team won a pair of CVC East Division games on Saturday at Mason Activity Center, defeating Thiel 23-25, 14-25, 25-23, 25-20, 15-10 before knocking off host Cairn 23-25, 14-25, 25-23, 25-20, 15-10.

With the wins, the Mustangs (21-11, 6-2 CVC) posted its third-straight 20-win season and fourth in the last five years. The school record for wins is 26 set in 2011 when the team went 26-7.

The team is now 5-4 in five-set games this season.

Stevenson finished its conference schedule in a tie for first-place atop the East Division standings with No. 8 Juniata as both teams went 6-2. However, the Eagles will earn the division's top-seed in the 2013 CVC Championship as a result of them winning five sets in two divisional games against the Mustangs this season. Stevenson won four.

As a result, the Mustangs will be the second seed from the East Division and play Milwaukee School of Engineering, the third seed from the West Division, in the first round on Friday, April 12. The game will mark a rematch of last year's first round contest won by Stevenson, 28-26, 25-17, 25-23.

On Saturday, freshman Kyle Pottieger (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) totaled 23 kills and 15 block assists in the two games while sophomore Kyle Wisener (York, Pa./Central York) had 25 kills and 13 total blocks. Junior Adam Thatcher (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) had 36 digs.

Filling in for injured junior Austin Jacoby (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge), Martin totaled a season-high 20 kills versus Thiel, two shy of his career set in a five-set win against Hunter on Mar. 12, 2011. It was Martin's third career game with at least 20 kills.

Martin also had a career-high 25 digs against the Tomcats (19-10), marking the first 20-kill, 20-dig performance of his career.

Pottieger had 12 kills and six block assists while Wisner added 11 kills, one block solo and three block assists as the Mustangs rallied from a 2-0 deficit. Thatcher had 22 digs, two shy of his season-high, and sophomore David Moler (York, Pa./Central York) totaled six kills, 49 assists and six digs.
