No. 5 Mustangs Split on Day Two of SUNY Poly Invitational

UTICA, N.Y.– The fifth-ranked Stevenson University men's volleyball team split a pair of matches on day two of the SUNY Poly Invitational.  The Mustangs (2-2) fell 3-0 to Lakeland, then posted a 3-2 win over the host Wildcats.

Game scores against Lakeland were 25-19, 25-22, 25-21, while against SUNY Poly they were 26-28, 25-20, 20-25, 25-15, 15-12.

Against the Wildcats, sophomore Landon Shorts totaled 18 kills and six digs, while classmate Jason Gardner finished with 11 kills.  Sophomore Avery Engel led the Mustangs defensively with seven digs, with senior Kyle Johnson also having six.  Sophomore Jared Chin notched 21 assists, while sophomore Billy Russo recording 13 and Johnson 12.  Senior Nate Ellis had two solo blocks and two block assists, while Gardner added four block assists.

Shorts notched nine kills against the Muskies, while senior Michael Fehrs recorded eight and Ellis six.  Freshman Derek Tangora recorded nine digs, while Shorts also added three service aces.

Stevenson hosts a two-day tournament next weekend and opens up next Friday, January 27 against Mount St. Joseph in a 4:00 match at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
