NEWARK, N.J. - The Stevenson men's volleyball team dropped just one set on the day as the Mustangs posted a 3-1 victory over Alvernia before sweeping host Rutgers-Newark to pick up two Continental Volleyball Conference wins Saturday afternoon at The Golden Dome.
The Mustangs (16-8, 7-2) defeated Alvernia, 25-11, 25-21, 18-25, 25-11 in the first-ever meeting between the two schools before posting their third consecutive win over Rutgers-Newark, 25-20, 25-23, 25-11.
In the opening contest versus the Crusaders (10-12, 1-8 CVC), sophomore Landon Shorts led all players with 16 kills. Shorts has totaled 16 double digit kills this season, including in seven of hislast eight matches. His .406 hitting percentage marked the third time he has hit at least .400.
Senior Michael Fehrs recorded a season-high 13 kills and the duo of Shorts and Fehrs combined for 65 of the team's 119 swings.
Both Shorts and senior Kyle Johnson recorded three service aces while Fehrs and sophomore Jason Gardner each totaled two. Meanwhile, freshman Derek Tangorra finished with 11 digs while Johnson added 38 assists.
Senior Nate Ellis had four block assists.
Versus the Scarlet Knights (10-14, 4-5 CVC), Shorts once again led all hitters with 12 kills while also adding 10 digs and another three service aces. Shorts, who set the single season record with 58 service aces a season ago, already has 54 this season.
Gardner added nine kills, nine digs and two block assists while Fehrs and Ellis each had eight kills. Johnson finished with another 38 assists while junior Alex Klunk had six kills, three digs and three block assists.
Stevenson returns to action on Wednesday, March 29 when the Mustangs host No. 11 Marymount (Va.) in a Continental Volleyball Conference contest beginning at 7:00 p.m.
