LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Stevenson men's volleyball team slid back from number five to number six in the newest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III poll as announced on Tuesday afternoon.
The Mustangs have been ranked in all four of the 2019 AVCA polls so far starting at No. 11 in the preseason before reaching as high as fifth last week. The team has still never been able to eclipse the program high of the fourth spot which that received at the end of the 2016 campaign after making a Final Four run.
Last week, Stevenson went 2-1 in a weekend trek through the State of Virginia. First, on Friday night they traveled to then eighth-ranked Southern Virginia University and survived a back-and-forth five-set match against the host Knights. The next day the Mustangs were at Eastern Mennonite University for a tri-match. The team started out the day by dispatching the host Royals in three sets holding the opponent under 20-points in all three frames. In the second contest of the afternoon, Stevenson faced-off with the second-ranked Stevens Ducks in a rematch of the 2018 NCAA Tournament Second Round which saw the Ducks win in four tough sets. This time No. 2 Stevens was still a little too much for the Mustangs as their ten-match winning streak was stopped in straight sets. Stevenson as a team ranks second in the NCAA in blocks per set at 2.74, while sophomore Nate Reynolds sits in the sixth position individually putting up 1.35 per set.
The Mustangs have a week off before wrapping up their 13-game road trip on Wednesday, February 13 as they open-up Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) play at Alvernia University for a 7pm start. Then, Stevenson will finally start the home portion of their schedule on Saturday, February 16 when they host Wilkes University and Arcadia University in a MAC tri-match beginning at 12pm.
