Softball Goes 1-1 in Season Opener

Ashland, VA -  The Mustangs disappointment at the postponement of the opening of their new stadium due to the weather did not last long as they defeated Randolph-Macon in their first game of the season. Due to the postponement the Mustangs traveled to Randolph-Macon to take on the Yellow Jackets in a double-header this afternoon. 

The Mustangs went 1-1 on the day, winning the first game 4-2, and falling in the second 2-4.  There was no scoring done in either game until the 5th inning, with excellent defensive play and strong pitching from both teams highlighting the start of each game.

In the first game the Mustangs totaled seven hits and Sarah Moelter (Timonium, MD/Dulaney) was credited with the first win of the season, throwing 121 pitches, four strikeouts, allowing only nine hits, and two earned runs.  

Randolph-Macon took the initial lead in the 5th inning 1-0.  The Mustangs answered with three runs in the top of the 6th.  The Yellow Jackets could only manage to get one run off the Mustang defense in the 6th inning and Villa closed out the scoring with one run in the 7th inning. 

Freshman Laura Bedgar (Glen Rock, PA/Susquehannock) made her first collegiate appearance going 2-for-3; Jackie Wineke (Glen Burnie, MD/Glen Burnie) went 1-for-3; Emily Roper (Baltimore, MD/Western Technology) went 1-for-3 with two RBIs; Samantha Rice (Columbia, MD/Howard) went 2-for-4; and Jessica O'Neill (Columbia, MD/Howard) went 1-for-4 and played phenomenal defense keeping the Yellow Jackets from crossing the plate.   

In the second game, Randolph-Macon took the initial lead again in the 5th inning with two runs.  Villa scored two in the top of the 6th to tie the Yellow Jackets, however, Randolph-Macon scored two more at the bottom of the 6th and held the Mustangs scoreless for the rest of the game. 

Julianne Roper (Baltimore, MD/Western Tech) pitched for the first five innings allowing five hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts.  Freshman Michelle January (Baltimore, MD/ Eastern Tech) came in for one inning and threw her first career strikeout.  She also allowed three hits, two earned runs, and was credited with the loss. 

Wineke went 2-for-4; Roper went 2-for-3; Bedgar went 2-for-3; Jessica Bandzwolek (Fallston, MD/ Fallston) went 1-for-3 with a double and a RBI; Mueller went 2-for-4 with a double; O'Neill 2-for-3 with a double and a RBI. 

The Mustangs are 1-1 overall and hit the road on Friday to take on Wilson College.
