Mustangs Almost Upset Eagles In CAC First Round
Fredericksburg, VA - The Villa Julie Softball Team produced a stunning perfomance but could not pull off the upset against the number 2 seeded team, the University of Mary Washington.
The Mustangs had lost both regular season games to the Eagles, 9-1 and 14-5. This was to be a different game as Villa would make the Eagles fight all the way for the win. The Mustangs started strong and grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third inning, shocking the Eagles. UMW bounced back with 2 in the fourth to tie the game. The game descended into a defensive battle before the Eagles broke the deadlock with the game winning run in the 6th inning.
Sarah Moelter pitched another great game for the Mustangs, recording 82 pitches in 6 innings. Moelter gave up only 5 hits, 3 walks, struck out 3, and 1 earned run from 3 runs scored. On offense, Senior Elizabeth Penniman led the way, going 1 for 3 (1 RBI and 1 Run scored), followed by Jessie O'Neill 1 for 3, Sam Rice 1 for 3 (1 Run scored) and Kelly Dorsey 1 for 3 (1 double).
The next game of the CAC playoffs will be at Salisbury on Saturday, April 19th at 12:00pm vs. the loser of game 4, Salisbury (1st seed) vs. Wesley. Check out the schedule for updates.
