Salisbury, MD - The Villa Julie College Softball Team produced two complete performances on a memorable day for the Mustangs. #6 Seeded Villa ousted #5 Wesley College, 10-0, and then shocked the softball community by beating #2 York College, 3-2. The Mustangs now face the University of Mary Washingotn in semi-final action.
Under the leadership of Head Coach Stefanie Meyerson the Mustangs traveled to the CAC Tournament believing they could come home with the CAC Title. After losing to the University of Mary Washington on Tuesday, 3-2, the Mustangs could not afford another loss in the double elimination tournament.
Villa's first game would be against the #5 seeded Wesley College, a team they had split the regular season series with. It would not take the Mustangs long to assert their dominance as they exploded for seven runs in the second inning, and added three more in the third, to pull away quickly from Wesley. The Mustangs would finish after 5 innings with an emphatic 10-0 win. Pitcher Jessica O'Neill was impressive over 5 innings, giving up only 3 hits, 1 walk, struck out 6, and gave up 0 runs for her 1st shut out of the season. On offense the bats cam alive for the Mustangs. Jackie Dorsey was 1 for 3 with 1 RBI, Jackie Wineke 1 for 3 with 1 RBI, Jessica Bandzwolek 2 for 3 with 1 RBI, Jessie O'Neill 1 for 3 with 1 RBI & 1 double, Lindsey Mueller 1 for 2, Emily Roper 1 for 3 & 1 double, Sam Rice 2 for 4, and Elizabeth Penniman 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs & 1 double.
The win over Wesley left the Mustangs to face the number 2 seeded York College, wth the winner progressing to the semi-finals and the loser going home. Against York, VJC scored three runs in the third inning, then had to hold off the Spartans, who tallied single runs in the bottom of the fourth and seventh innings before falling a run short. This was the first time ever that VJC had beaten York College, who had beat them in both regular season games. Sarah Moelter recorded another great win, pitching all 7 innings, giving up only 5 hits, 1 walk, struck out 2 and gave up 2 earned runs.
