Softball Team Celebrates Seniors
Owings Mills, MD - The Villa Julie College Softball team celebrated their four seniors today in their last regular season game against Frostburg State University. The Mustangs produced a heroic performance but could not grab a win, losing both games by one run.
The game started at a slow pace with both teams defenses shutting down any chances to put the first run on the board. The Mustangs would draw first blood, putting 2 runs up on the scoreboard to lead 2-0 in the 3rd. Pitcher Sarah Moelter started strong but could do nothing to prevent the Bobcats hitting back and grabbing a 3-2 lead after 4 innings. The Bobcats extended their lead with another run but the Mustangs cut the lead back to one in the 6th. FSU tallied one more insurance run in the 7th with the Mustangs only able to hit one back. The game would finish 5-4 in favor of the red and black. On offense, senior Elizabeth Penniman went 1-4 with 2 RBI's in her second to last game for Villa. Also Samantha Rice went 2-4 with 1 run, Lindsey Mueller went 1-4 with 1 RBI and 1 run, Jessica Bandzwolek was 2-4, Kelly Dorsey went 2-3 with 1 RBI, and Jackie Wineke was 1-3 with 1 run.
The second game was exactly like the first with the Mustangs taking an early lead after the first inning. The Bobcats would hit back with 2 in the second inning but again Villa caught up and tied the game in the third after strong pitching from Julianne Roper halted the Bobcats attack. Frostburg regained the lead in the fourth but again a resilient Villa Julie team pulled them back and sent the game into extra innings. It was to prove a heartbreaker for Villa and their seniors as FSU would grab the run in the eighth inning to seal the win. The Mustang offense was led by senior Jackie Dorsey, going 3-3 with 1 run scored, in her final game. A strong defensive performance from Jackie Wineke in the outfield and Emily Roper at first base helped keep the game close.
After the game the Mustangs celebrated the careers of their four seniors. Coach Stefanie Meyerson had these kind winds to say about her players:
Jacquelyn Dorsey - 4 year player / 2 year Captain
This is Jackie's 2nd year as Captain, but her swiftness and driving force in the outfield has been apart of this team since day one. Dorsey has most consistently battled in the lead off spot for 4 years but has made an impact where ever we put her. She has also reliably finished as one the top offensive player spots since her freshman year. Jackie holds the VJC single season award for most steals in a season as well as most walks. She also won an All-NEAC 2nd Team Award as an Outfielder twice as well as an NFCA All-American Scholar-Athlete Award with a 3.5 GPA or above for her junior year. It will be very hard to see any other player wearing the #1 on in the game.
Elizabeth Penniman - 4 year player / 2 year Captain
Liz is a league of her own. She has been a leader and starter for the Lady Mustangs since her freshman year. Her presences on the game field and in practice dictate excellence and superiority in so many aspects. She has proven to be one of the top Utility Players in the softball program at Villa Julie College. Her strive for perfection made her successful and the fact that she wanted to the best, she was able to show others on the team how to get there. This athlete has received numerous well deserved accolades such as; All- NEAC Honorable Mentioned 3rd baseman, All-NEAC 1st Team Utility Player, NEAC Scholar Athlete Award twice, NFCA All-American Scholar-Athlete Award for 3.5 GPA or above for her junior year, Nationally ranked 72nd as a junior for her batting avg. out the top 100 DIII softball athletes and was also ranked 56th in the nation in the category of toughest player to strikeout. This year Liz was one of two Villa Julie Softball players to win an All-CAC 1st Team award in our first year in the conference. She also holds the VJC career record for RBIs, games played, games started, and most at bats.
Emily Roper - 2 year player
Emily has started both seasons with the Lady Mustangs after
transferring in her junior year and has lead the team with a
positive energy to get the job done. Her enthusiastic and
motivating drive helped make this team successful on so many
levels. Emily's consistent positive attitude, sportsmanship,
and top notch performance is not only evident in her athletic
abilities, but in every aspect of her life. Her talents on
and off the field guarantee her success beyond VJC.
Jackelyn Wineke - 2 year player
Jackie has been the glue that kept the outfielders together since she transferred in her junior year. Her glove talents in the starting centerfield position accumulated the most putouts and assists of any VJC outfielder in two consecutive years played. Jackie meshed herself into a new softball program when she arrived with such ease. She has proven herself both at the bat and on the field to be a top notch player.
