ANNVILLE, Pa. - Making their first ever appearance in a conference championship game, the Stevenson softball team fell to top-seeded Lebanon Valley in the double elimination Commonwealth Conference tournament Sunday at Lebanon Valley Softball Field, 8-1.
The No. 5-seeded Mustangs (22-21) were the lowest-ever seed to reach the title game in the first season the tournament expanded to five teams.
The Dutchmen (32-5-1) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after back-to-back throwing errors by Stevenson to put runners on first and second. In the third inning, Emily Johnson hit a two-out grand slam to push to lead to 5-0.
Freshman Kristen Mueller (Bel Air, Md./Harford Tech) led the Mustangs going 2-for-3 while sophomore Briana Pichalski (Port Reading, N.J./Woodbridge) suffered the loss scattering five hits and four earned runs in 3.1 innings.
Most Valuable Player Sam Derr went 1-for-2 with one run and one RBI while also earning the victory in the circle, allowing five hits and no earned runs.
Stevenson will await selections for the 2013 ECAC Division III South Championship on Monday to see if they will be making their second postseason appearance in the programs 14-year history.
