WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Stevenson softball sophomore Morghan Fulton tied the single season record with her fourth shutout of the season while senior Brooke Steinbach launched her second home run of the season as the Mustangs finished MAC Commonwealth play with a doubleheader sweep over Lycoming Saturday afternoon at Robert L. Shangraw Athletic Complex.
The Mustangs (16-16, 7-9 MAC Commonwealth), who posted a 4-0 shutout in game one and a 3-1 eight inning win in game two, finished one game out of the conference tournament. Stevenson finished just two games behind third place Lebanon Valley.
In the opening game, Stevenson recorded five hits in the second inning to bring in all four of its runs. Sophomore Haley Lennon hit a two-RBI single to right center to score classmates Danielle Ebbighausen, who hit a double in her first at bat, and Fulton who singled. With two outs, Steinbach hit a bases loaded single to bring in a pair of runs.
Steinbach and Fulton each recorded a pair of hits. Freshman Kayla Briles remained perfect on the season with her 23rd consecutive stolen base, which already ranks inside the top 10 in program history. Her 23 steals ranks tied for sixth along with senior Erin Stephey who also recorded a stolen base in the opening game.
In the pitching circle, Fulton did not allow more than one hit in any single inning and allowed just five. Fulton picks up her 10th win of the season, which ranks tied for fourth in a single season.
The Mustangs took an early lead in game two, as Steinbach launched a two-out home run in the top of the first inning. The senior, who had never hit a home run in her first three seasons, has hit two this season.
Lycoming (12-24, 2-14 MAC Commonwealth) scored its first run of the day on a two-out single in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game at 1-1. The two teams then combined for just five hits over the next five innings before going to extra innings.
Stevenson loaded the bases with the first three batters in the top of the eighth inning on three straight single by Lennon, Briles and Stephey. After a force out at home, Steinbach knocked in a run with a fielders choice before an RBI groundout by senior Jasmyn Ogletree scored a second run.
The Mustangs defense turned a double play in the bottom half of the inning after a leadoff single before stranding a base runner after a groundout to end the game.
Freshman Haley Monahan picked up her second win after allowing just one earned run on eight hits.
Stevenson concludes the 2018 regular season on Tuesday, May 1 when the Mustangs travel to York (Pa.) for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
