Mustangs Travel to First Conference Game

St. Mary’s City, MD-

As the Mustangs took on their first Capital Athletic Conference opponent, St. Mary’s College Seahawks (4-0), the women suffered their first conference loss, bringing their overall record to 0-4.

The Seahawks were first to land points on the scoreboard, but the Mustangs quickly responded as Tonia Cristino (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) made a three-point play and put the Mustangs back up by a point. But with the Seahawks out-shooting the Mustangs 43.3 to 15.8 percent, they regained and held on to the lead for the rest of the period. The half finished with the Mustangs trailing by 27 points at 39-12.

In the second half, the Mustangs were focused on putting a stop to St. Mary’s run; however, the undefeated Seahawks continued to dominate the scoreboard, defeating the Mustangs 72-34.

With two blocks and eight rebounds, Denita Brown (Laurel, MD/Montrose Christian) led the Mustang defense in an attempt to turn the game around. Top scorers Kristen Steiner (Forest Hill, MD/Fallston) with eight points and Ashley Burrell (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) with six also aided the team in its efforts.

The team will play its first CAC conference home game against the York College Spartans on Saturday, December 1st.
