Mustangs Face Catholic Cardinals
Towson, Md.-Villa Julie women's basketball traveled to Towson University to contest the Cardinals of Catholic University (5-2), seeking to add another win to the team's record.
The Mustangs (1-7) started off strong in the first half, putting the first points on the board with a jumper from Tara Galvin (Lilitz, PA/Manheim Township). The team continued to hold on to the lead until the Cardinals tied the score 11-11 with just over 10 minutes left in the period. Starting point guard Tonia Cristino (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) led the Mustangs' effort with eight points in the first half, but Catholic headed into halftime with a three-point lead at 25-22.
It was still anyone's game, and the teams came back from the locker rooms ready to earn the win. Both teams played with tough aggression, attacking the paint for both points and rebounds, and with three minutes left to play, a free throw from Cristino gave the Mustangs a one-point lead at 50-49. With 33 seconds on the game clock, a lay-up from the Cardinals put the team ahead by three, leaving the Mustangs to create a fast three-point play for the win, but two free throws from the Cardinals sealed the Mustangs' fate and ended the game 57-52.
Cristino, who ended the game with 19 points, was the leading scorer for the Mustangs. Galvin added another eight points, while Ashley Burrell (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) tallied a total of six. Tanisha Foster (Baltimore, MD/ St. Frances Academy) led the team's rebounding effort with six total rebounds, while Alex Mercer (Eldersburg, MD/Liberty) and Kristen Steiner (Forest Hill, MD/Fallston) tied for five each.
The Mustangs go against Penn State-York in their next home game, kicking off the annual Legg Mason Winter Classic on Jan. 5 at 1:30 p.m.
