Women's Basketball Claims Second Win in Phoenix
Phoenix, AZ-- Villa Julie's women's basketball team headed west to compete in the Grand Canyon Classic Tournament, falling to the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College and defeating the Warriors of Lycoming College.
On Dec. 30, the Mustangs challenged undefeated Randolph-Macon (Ashland, Va.), looking to give the Yellow Jackets their first loss of the season. The Yellow Jackets started out with an early lead, but with a jump shot by Allison Humphries (Bel Air, MD/ John Carroll), assisted by Kristen Steiner (Forest Hill, MD/ Fallston), the Mustangs showed they would not easily be defeated. By 8:42, the women had narrowed the scoring gap and trailed by just four points, and at the end of the half, the Mustangs were down by nine at 29-20.
It was still anyone's game at the start of the second half, and as both teams played agressive defense, it was impossible for either team to score for the first three minutes of the period. Both teams continued to work hard, and at 14:44, a layup from Steiner brought the Mustangs within eight points of their opposition. However, the team wasn't able to turn the game around, and the women were defeated 60-40.
Leading the team in scoring and rebounds was Tanisha Foster (Baltimore, MD/ St. Frances Academy), who scored 15 points and grabbed nine total rebounds. Steiner also added eight points and seven rebounds to the team's statistics. Tonia Cristino (Lancaster, PA/ Hempfield) tallied four assists and three steals.
Cristino also got scoring started in the Mustangs' second tournament game against Lycoming (Williamsport, Pa.) with a three-point shot in the first play of the game. The Mustangs maintained their dominance over the scoreboard, shooting nearly 50 percent from the field and from behind the three-point line and 90 percent from the free-throw line. The team ended the first half 38-24 with a final three-pointer from Cristino with under a minute on the clock.
Returning from halftime, the Mustangs continued to rule the floor, while the Warriors attempted to catch up. A three-point play by Foster put the Mustangs ahead by 24 points midway through the second half, and the team went on to finish the game 68-49 to improve its overall record to 2-8.
Cristino led the game's scoring with a total of 18 points, followed by Foster with 13 points and Steiner with 11 points. Foster also led the Mustangs in rebounding with a total of eight.
The women go on to play against Penn State-York at home in the 10th Annual Legg Mason Winter Classic tournament on Jan. 5 at 1:30. Kean University will be playing Penn State-Berks at 3:45.
