Villa Finishes in Second Place in Legg Mason Classic

Stevenson, MD-Coming off a win in the first round of the tournament, the Mustangs (3-9) finished in second place in the 10th Annual Legg Mason Winter Classic behind the Kean University Cougars (10-1).

The Mustangs got off to a slow start, putting points on the board after the Cougars were ahead 19-0. At 12:28, starting point guard Tonia Cristino (Lancaster, PA/ Hempfield) put the Cougars scoring run to an end with a three-pointer, and the Mustangs strived to get back into the game. The team fought to gain control of the game, but the Cougars went on to finish the half with a 17-point lead at 37-20.

Determined to be the tournament champions, the Mustangs went into the second half playing aggressive defense and continuing to score. With just over eight minutes left in the period, a steal and a quick jumper from guard Morgan James (Baltimore, MD/ Mercy) brought the score to 51-36 with the Cougars still on top. The teams battled until the end, but the Mustangs were unable to come up with the win, suffering a 72-55 loss.

Freshman forward Kristen Steiner (Forest Hill, MD/ Fallston) totaled 12 points for the Mustangs while Denita Brown (Laurel, MD/ Montrose Christian) and Cristino added 11 points each to the team's score. Steiner also led the team in rebounds with a total of six.

Penn State Berks defeated Penn State York, 77-54, in the consolation game of the 10th Annual Legg Mason Winter Classic in the first game of the day.  Berks' Courtney Bailey had the game high of 20 points and 16 boards and Nicole Davis was the high scorer for York totaling 15 points.

Villa Julie will face the College of Notre Dame in a home contest on Jan. 8 at 7 p.m.
