Conference Competition Heats Up For Women's Baskeball
Fredericksburg, MD - As the basketball season nears its peak, the women faced one of their most challenging opponents to date, the University of Mary Washington Eagles. The Eagles, who rank at the top of conference standings, are undefeated in the Capital Athletic Conference and have suffered one loss out of their sixteen regular season games played so far.
It was a close game until a 14-2 run by the Eagles put the team in charge of the score at 18-7 halfway through the period. A jump-shot from Kristen Steiner (Forest Hill, MD/ Fallston) and a bucket from Tonia Cristino (Lancaster, PA/ Hempfield) for three brought the Eagles' run to a halt, bringing the Mustangs' scoring shortage down to six. But the Mustangs struggled to keep UMW from putting points on the board, and the opposing team ended the first half with a 17-point lead at 35-18.
The Villa Julie women continued in their effort to close the gap between their score and that of their rival during the second half, but were restrained by the defense of the Eagles. At 4:21, a three-pointer from Cristino showed the Mustangs' endurance but was not enough to make up the 33-point difference on the scoreboard, and UMW went on to win the game 71-36.
Leading the Mustangs with 11 points was Tanisha Foster (Baltimore, MD/ St. Frances Academy), who also pulled down six rebounds. Steiner also aided the team with eight points and had the team's most rebounds with a total of 10, and Ashley Burrell (Baltimore, MD/ Institute of Notre Dame) added another eight points to the Mustangs' score.
