Mustangs Shock St. Marys In OT
Stevenson, MD - In a close battle at home, the Mustangs prevail 73-70 in overtime against conference rival St. Mary's College (11-6, 5-4), avenging the defeat they suffered against the Seahawks earlier in the season.
Showing the Seahawks what was in store, Tara Galvin (Lilitz, PA/ Manheim Township) opened the game with a three-pointer, her first of six. The Mustangs gripped the lead until the Hawks collected enough points to be ahead by one at 13-12 nearing mid-period. But a three from Tonia Cristino at 10:02 put the lead back in the Mustang's hands, where it remained until halftime.
With just six points between the two scores going into the final half at 29-23, both teams charged the floor hoping to take the game. Morgan James (Bel Air, MD/ Mercy) added two for the home team with lay-up within seconds, but the Seahawks answered with two in their next possession. The Hawks inched back into the game, tying the score at 39-39 with 13:43 on the clock.
Each team struggled to hold the lead as it was tossed between the two challengers, but St. Mary's had the upper hand at 64-61 with 20 seconds to go. Not ready for the game to end, the Mustangs looked for a three-pointer in the final seconds, and found it when Galvin hit one just before the buzzer. The shot brought the score to 64-64, and sent the teams into overtime.
The teams continued their rivalry into the bonus period, and a jumper from Tanisha Foster (Baltimore, MD/ St. Frances Academy), assisted by James, kept the game tied 66-66. Thanks to the team making the most of its free-throw shooting, landing 5 of 8 in overtime, the Mustangs found themselves on top as the game drew to a close. Only trailing by three points, the Seahawks made an attempt to tie the score with four seconds left, but a decision-making block by Foster gave the Mustangs the win.
Three of Villa Julie's players acquired double-digit stats in the points column: Foster and Galvin with 20 each and Ashley Burrell with 12. Tonia Cristino (Lancaster, PA/ Hempfield) also scored nine for the Mustangs. Foster pulled down 11 rebounds, while Galvin grabbed 10.
In their next contest, the Mustangs will face CAC opponent York College on the road Wednesday, Jan. 30 at 6 p.m.
