Mustangs Lose to CAC Leader

Arlington, VA - Traveling to the home of the Marymount University Saints (20-2, 12-1), the Villa Julie women's basketball team faced the Capital Athletic Conference's leader in hopes of claiming a big win. However, the Saints couldn't be stopped, and the Mustangs were stuck with a 64-35 loss added to their record, bringing them to 7-15 overall for the season and 4-9 in the CAC.

After answering the Saints' game-opening two points with a lay-up from guard Morgan James (Bel Air, MD/ Mercy), the Mustangs, missing senior forward Tanisha Foster (Baltimore, MD/ St. Frances Academy), took to Marymount with an attitude of determination. The teams' scores moved in sync as the half went on, with each team constantly striving to keep its short distance ahead of the other on the scoreboard.

The Mustangs kept up with the Marymount tempo, and just after the halfway mark of the first period, a 3-pointer from Tonia Cristino (Lancaster, PA/ Hempfield) brought the score to 17-14, with the Mustangs fighting to make it their game. But a long basket from Marymount's Christina LaVigna answered the Mustangs' three, and the Saints went on a 13-point spurt, holding Villa Julie to 15 points for almost six minutes. Marymount ended the first half with a comfortable lead at 35-19.

Starting off strong in the second half, Villa Julie was first to add points to its score, as Ashley Burell (Baltimore, MD/ Institute of Notre Dame) hit a shot from the free-throw line. At 9:07, the team still pursued victory, and a lay-up from Denita Brown (Laurel, MD/ Montrose Christian) added two points to the visitors' score. However, the Saints continued to pull away and dominate the court, claiming a CAC win against the Mustangs in the end.

Cristino scored the team-high of 11 points, and Burrell and James tied at seven points each for the night. Burrell also lead the Mustangs in rebounding with a total of nine, followed by Kristen Steiner (Forest Hill, MD/ Fallston) with eight.

The women hit the road again on Saturday, Feb. 16 to face CAC-competitor Salisbury University at 2 p.m.
