Mustangs Lose Out to Salisbury
Salisbury, MD - As the Mustangs near the home stretch of their first Capital Athletic Conference regular season, they continue striving to be fierce competitors. But a tough contest on the home court of the Salisbury University Seagulls (10-13, 7-7) left the Villa Julie team suffering a 68-51 loss. The match brings the women to 7-16 overall and 4-10 in the CAC.
Starting guard Morgan James (Bel Air, MD/ Mercy), assisted by Kristen Steiner (Forest Hill, MD/ Fallston), began the game's scoring with a layup at 19:35. But by mid-half, Salisbury had gained a 12-point lead, as the scoreboard showed 20-8. As the Mustangs struggled to score, Steiner managed a layup, bringing the score to 36-10 with 3:39 left in the period. A final jumper by Ashley Burrell (Baltimore, MD/ Institute of Notre Dame) brought the score to 43-16, with the Mustangs taking a 27-point deficit into the second half.
Villa Julie came back from the locker room ready to close the gap between the two scores, and played hard defense in an effort to keep the Seagulls' offense from gaining momentum. At 18:09, Steiner scored the first points of the half with a free throw, taking the score to 46-17. A layup by Tonia Cristino (Lancaster, PA/ Hempfield), assisted by Allison Humphries (Bel Air, MD/ John Carroll), cut Salisbury's lead to 18 at the 12-minute mark. The Mustangs outscored their opponent by 10 points in the final period, but couldn't come up with the victory.
Leading the team with 15 points and six rebounds was Burrell, and with 11 points and five rebounds, Steiner also aided the team's attempt.
Returning home on Wednesday, Feb. 20, the Mustangs will face Hood College at 6 p.m.
