Women's Basketball Season Comes To An End
Arlington, VA - Completing their first season as Capital Athletic Conference contenders, the women of Villa Julie basketball fell short of victory to CAC number two Marymount University (22-4, 13-3) on the road in the conference quarterfinals. The Mustangs ended the season with a final record of 7-19 overall and 4-12 in the CAC.
With an assist from Kristen Steiner (Forest Hill, MD/ Fallston), Tara Galvin (Lilitz, PA/ Manheim Township) landed the first points of the game with a jump shot at 17:19. The teams battled it out from there, and strong defense from both sides made it difficult to score. But by 13:32, the Saints had a five-point lead at 10-5.
Villa Julie worked hard to stay in the game, and a layup from Steiner at 2:05 held the Saints' lead down to six. Marymount went on to end the half ahead of the Mustangs by 11 at 24-13.
Returning to the court, the visitors sustained their hopes for a win and continued toward their goal of an upset in the conference tournament, but the Saints kept increasing their lead. At 14:58, a layup from Ashley Burrell (Baltimore, MD/ Institute of Notre Dame) set the score at 36-20, with the Mustangs lagging behind 16 points.
The women continued to struggle against their tough opponent, and midway through the half, two points from Morgan James (Bel Air, MD/ Mercy) took the score to 49-30. With 3:05 left on the clock, Galvin hit a 3-pointer to aid the Mustangs' effort, but in the end, Marymount prevailed 71-37.
Totaling nine points and 11 rebounds, Burrell led Villa Julie on the court. Steiner also put up big numbers with nine points and eight rebounds. Tonia Cristino (Lancaster, PA/ Hempfield) added eight points to the Mustangs' score and Galvin accumulated seven points.
Marymount will challenge Salisbury at home in the conference semifinals at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28. CAC number one University of Mary Washington and York will also compete in the next round on Thursday in hopes of continuing on to the championship match.
