Pink Zone Highlights Saturday's Home Basketball Finales

STEVENSON, Md. - On Saturday, February 14, the Stevenson University men's and women's basketball teams will join over 1,250 schools and organizations who have signed up to participate in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's Pink Zone designed to raise money and awareness in the fight against breast cancer.

The women's game starts at 2:00 p.m., inside Carolyn Manuszak Student Union Gymnasium, followed by the men's game at 4:00 p.m.

Saturday's games are also the final home games of the 2008-09 season for the Mustangs and prior to each, the men and women will honor its seniors who are playing in the final home game of their collegiate careers.

In order to help raise money in the fight against breast cancer, the Stevenson athletics department will donate all the proceeds from admission sales to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. There will be a $5.00 admission charge to the games for all fans that do not have a CAC pass or an SUone card.

FREE food and drinks, served in a commemorative pink cup, and t-shirts will also be given out to those in attendance while supplies last. WBCA Pink Zone t-shirts will be distributed during the women's game with special white t-shirts highlighting the school's CAC rivalry with Salisbury being handed out during the men's game.

The women's basketball team will be wearing the Pink Zone shirts in warmups as well pink shoe laces to show their support. The two teams will also use a commemorative pink and white game ball from Anaconda Sports.

Fans are also asked to signify their support of the fight against breast cancer by wearing pink to the game.

In addition to accepting donations, Stevenson will also have a silent auction of school apparel and other sports memorabilia for fans to bid on while selling frosted pink cookies for $1.00 and pink carnations for $2.00.

Some of the memorabilia includes autographs from Baltimore Ravens' Joe Flacco and Leron McClain, Baltimore Orioles' Nick Markakis and Brian Roberts and University of Maryland men's basketball head coach Gary Williams and former star Juan Dixon.

A special item up for bid will be a pink and white game ball autographed by Kay Yow's sister, University of Maryland Director of Athletics Debbie Yow and head women's basketball coach Brenda Frese who led the Terrapins to the 2006 NCAA championship.

The big prize on Saturday will be a 16 GB iPod Touch that will be given away through a student raffle for Stevenson students, courtesy of the president's office. Students just need to show their ID at the entrance to Student Union Gymnasium to claim their ticket.

During timeouts, halftime and between games, the Stevenson Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will be organizing contests and prizes to be given away to participants who sign up at the main entrance to the gym.

The Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund was announced on Dec. 3, 2007 in honor of the former N.C. State head women's basketball coach and founding member of the WBCA who was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987 and passed away on Jan. 24, 2009.

In 38 years as a college head coach, Yow was one of only six Division I head coaches to achieve 700 career victories. She was also the head coach of the 1988 US Olympic Team that won the gold medal in Seoul, Korea.
