OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson women's basketball sophomore Kayleigh Guzek (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) totaled six points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals to lead the Mustangs to a 50-37 non-conference victory over NYU-Poly Saturday at Owings Mills Gymnasium in their home opener.
Stevenson (2-0), who earned its second-straight win in a home opener, posted its first 2-0 start since the 2005-06 season and the team's third overall. The Mustangs also started the 2004-05 season with back-to-back victories.
Stevenson has never started a season 3-0.
The Blue Jays jumped to a 13-10 lead in the game's first 7:28 before the Mustangs closed the half with a 25-9 run to take a 35-22 halftime lead.
NYU-Poly shot 52.9 percent from the floor in the opening half, but was held to just 17 attempts while Stevenson made 15 attempts, including five three-pointers.
Neither team would score in the second half until the 12:24 mark when Stevenson freshman Kendall Zickefoose (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) hit the second of two free throws to snap a streal of 7:36 without a point.
During that time, the two teams combined to go 0-for-26 with 10 turnovers.
The Mustangs would take their largest lead of the game with 9:59 remaining when freshman Angie Domingo-Francois (Burtonsville, Md./James Hubert Blake) scored the second of back-to-back baskets to put Stevenson in front by 16, 40-24.
Senior Sam Murray (Reisterstown, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) led the Mustangs with nine points, all of which came in the first half, while also adding a team-high nine rebounds, all of which came in the second half.
Sophomore Kyarra Harmon (Waldorf, Md./North Point) had six points and eight rebounds while freshman Mattie Milchling (Cockeysville, Md./Notre Dame Prep) also had eight rebounds. Freshman Stephanie Martinez (Freehold Township, N.J./Freehold Township) totaled four points, five rebounds and three assists while freshman Ruth Casadevall (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Wallenpaupack) had six points and six rebounds.
Shelby Bruns led the Blue Jays (0-4) with 12 points and 19 rebounds, both game-highs. Alyssa D'Apice had 10 points and five rebounds while Catherine Thompson added nine points and eight rebounds.
NYU-Poly's five starters combined for all 37 of the team's points and 38 of its 45 rebounds.
The 37 points allowed by the Mustangs were they fewest the team has allowed an opponent since a 50-30 victory over Trinity (D.C.) at home on Feb. 12, 2011.
Stevenson looks for its first-ever 3-0 start on Wednesday when it opens its first season in the Commonwealth Conference against former Capital Athletic Conference rival Hood beginning at 6:00 p.m., at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
