Kayleigh Guzek, Kyarra Harmon Lead Mustangs to 65-61 Victory Over Roanoke

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Led by 14 points each from sophomores Kayleigh Guzek (Asburn, Va./Stone Bridge) and Kyarra Harmon (Waldorf, Md./North Point), the Stevenson women's basketball team held off a late rally from Roanoke to post a 65-61 non-conference victory Saturday at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

The Mustangs (4-3) improved to 3-1 at home this season and 3-0 in non-conference contests by winning the first-ever meeting between the two teams. The Maroons are one of two opponents from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference on Stevenson's schedule this season as the team will also face Virginia Wesleyan on the road on January 13.

Roanoke (2-7), who is 1-5 against non-conference opponents this season, jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the game's first 1:22 before the Mustangs answered with their own six-point streak to tie the game at 6-6.

The game featured six ties and seven lead changes, including five ties and five lead changes in the first half. After the game was tied at 29-29 at halftime, Stevenson would take the lead for good at 35-33 on a three-pointer by Guzek with 17:35 remaining in the second half.

The three-pointer keyed an 11-0 run by the Mustangs as they took their largest lead of the game at 43-33 with 13:28 to play.

However, led by Paxton Gwin, the Maroons would pull within one on three separate occassions in the final nine minutes and trailed by just two, 63-61 with 25 seconds left on a lay-up by Kelsey Smith.

Guzek missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 11 seconds remaining, but grabbed her own rebound before freshman Stephanie Martinez (Freehold Township, N.J./Freehold Township) was fouled with just 1.1 seconds to play. She would hit both free throws to make it a two possession game and snap Stevenson's two-game losing streak.

Harmon scored 12 of her 14 points in the second half where she was 6-for-8 from the floor. Guzek added nine points in the half and was 4-for-4 from the field as the two combined for 21 of the team's 36 points on 10-of-12 shooting.

Martinez and freshman Ruth Casadevall (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Wallenpaupack) each finished with eight points while senior Sam Murray (Reisterstown, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) added five points, six rebounds and three assists.

Gwin totaled 23 points, seven rebounds and three assists for the Maroons while Laurel Hankins had 13 points and five rebounds. Tatum McKee had seven points and a game-high eight rebounds.

The Mustangs will now be idle for 21 days until they travel to No. 13 Lebanon Valley for a Commonwealth Conference contest on January 5 at 3:00 p.m.
