Arcadia Overtakes Mustangs Late

GLENSIDE, Pa. - Arcadia University outscored Stevenson University 24-10 in the final quarter to take a 58-52 MAC Commonwealth women's basketball victory at Alumni Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.

  • After three ties, Stevenson (3-7, 0-4 MAC Commonwealth) took an 8-6 lead on a layup by Olivia Coleman with 1:14 left in the frame.
  • The Mustangs held a 9-6 lead at the end of the first.
  • Coleman had five points in the quarter.

  • Stevenson extended its lead to 12-6 before a layup by Julia Malkowski pulled Arcadia (5-5, 3-1 MAC Commonwealth) within four at the 8:19 mark.
  • A 9-0 Mustang run capped by a free throw by Hannah Crist with 4:14 left before halftime put the visitors up 21-8.
  • Stevenson took its largest lead, 26-10, at the 2:31 mark on a Crist three.
  • The Knights scored the final six points of the half and went into intermission down 10, 26-16.

  • A layup by Kellie Johnson just over two minutes into the second half put the Mustangs on top by a dozen, 31-19.
  • Arcadia chipped away and pulled within six, 35-29, on a free throw with 3:40 on the clock.
  • The lead fluctuated between five and seven before a Savana Herndon free throw at the end up the quarter gave Stevenson an eight-point cushion, 42-34.

  • A Crist three with 8:14 left extended Stevenson's lead to 10, 47-37.
  • Arcadia held the Mustangs without a field goal for over seven minutes and a 12-2 run capped by a free throw by Taylor Dunn tied the game 49-49 with 1:44 remaining.
  • With 41 seconds left, Dunn hit a three-pointer to give the hosts their first lead of the game, 52-49.
  • Arcadia eventually extended the run to 17-2, taking a 56-49 lead on two free throws by Dunn with 11 seconds left.
  • Alexa Sanmartin hit a three with nine seconds left to cut the lead to four, 56-52, but the Mustangs got no closer.

  • Johnson finished with career highs in points (17) and rebounds (11), going 8-12 from the floor.
  • Coleman flirted with a triple-double, scoring eight points while also recording career highs in rebounds (15) and blocked shots (7).
  • Crist knocked down a pair of three-pointers and finished with 10 points.
  • Stevenson held Arcadia to 26% shooting from the floor and shot 34.5%, but the Mustangs were just 9-22 at the free throw line, while the Knights went 13-19.
  • The hosts were also 7-20 behind the arc.
  • Stevenson dressed just nine players on Saturday.
  • Arcadia snapped a 10-game Mustang win streak in the series with the win.

  • Stevenson travels to the Daytona Beach Shootout, and will face Marian on Thursday, December 20 at 1 pm.
  • The next Mustang home game is Monday, January 7, when Stevenson hosts Stockton in a 7 pm non-conference game.
