Mustangs Lead Wire-to-Wire in Win at Hood

FREDERICK, Md. - The Stevenson University women's basketball team jumped out to an 8-0 lead and led the whole way as it posted an 89-62 MAC Commonwealth triumph over Hood Wednesday night at BB&T Arena.

  • Stevenson (8-9, 3-5 MAC Commonwealth) staked itself to an 8-0 lead 1:50 into the game following a three by Denia Campbell.
  • After the Mustangs extended the lead to 13-2, Hood (5-12, 1-7 MAC Commonwealth) scored six straight points to pull within 13-8.
  • A layup by Kellie Johnson with four seconds left in the opening period put Stevenson up 23-14 after one.

  • Stevenson started to gradually pull away, with a pair of free throws by Jonyae Curry with 4:49 left making it a 38-23 game.
  • Hood pulled within 10, 42-32, on a Ebony Pitt basket with 2:08 left before halftime.
  • The Blazers cut the Mustang advantage to nine, 45-36, at intermission.

  • The guests opened the second half on a 9-2 run, with a free throw by Hannah Crist making it 52-36 at the 8:20 mark.
  • A Curry basket at the 6:49 mark extended the lead to 17, 56-39.
  • Hood cut the lead to nine, 58-49, with 2:37 to go following a 10-2 spurt.
  • Two free throws by Curry at the end of the period put Stevenson up a dozen, 64-52, entering the final frame.

  • Stevenson outscored Hood 15-3 over the first four-plus minutes of the fourth and a basket by Johnson with 5:24 gave the Mustangs a 24-point cushion, 79-55.
  • The Mustang lead grew to 27 twice, on a Laila Abdul-Rahman basket with 1:40 left and a layup by Montana Chance Herndon with 59 seconds to go.

  • Curry led the Mustangs with 22 points, going 8-11 from the floor and 6-7 at the free throw line.  She now needs just eight points for 1,000 for her career.
  • Crist tallied 18 points, one shy of her career high.  With one three-pointer she moved into a tie with Sam Murray for seventh place on the program's all-time list with 107.
  • Brandi Hall recorded 12 points, a career-high eight rebounds and six assists.
  • Olivia Coleman notched 10 points and eight rebounds, while Johnson added nine points and 10 rebounds off the bench.
  • Stevenson shot 42.7% overall, including 5-13 behind the arc and 14-19 at the free throw line, while holding Hood to 35.5% shooting for the contest.
  • The Mustangs committed a season-low seven turnovers while forcing 17, leading to a 18-5 lead in points off turnovers.
  • Stevenson outrebounded the Blazers 53-37, including 20-8 on the offensive glass.
  • Stevenson has won four of its last five games.
  • The Mustangs extended their win streak against Hood to 12 games.
  • Stevenson improved to 8-0 when scoring at least 70 points this season.
