Bruch All-Tournament, Mustangs Down Plymouth State 3-1 in Codfish Bowl
BOSTON, Mass. - Stevenson women's ice hockey freshman Molly O'Neil (Aurora, Colo./Colorado Selects) netted her second game-winning goal and team leading fifth goal of the season at 18:47 in the first period to clinch the victory over Plymouth State, 3-1, in the consolation game of the Sixth Annual Codfish Bowl hosted by UMass-Boston Friday afternoon.
O'Neil is tied for 15th in the nation in points per game for rookies joining freshman McKenzie Taggart (Centennial, Colo./Colorado Selects) with 10 points in 12 games.
The Mustangs (5-7) opened the scoring at 3:02 in the first period when freshman Sydney Sakwa (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Cranbrook Kingswood) netted her third of the season on helpers from freshmen Erin McLoughlin (Weston, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) and Rachel Martell (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead High School). Sakwa's goal was the fastest to open a game this season and thus in program history.
The Panthers (2-9) would respond less than three minutes later on a goal by Kate Banys, the 10th goal of the season for Plymouth State as a team, ranking 50th out of 53 in scoring offense nationally.
Martell would tack on an insurance goal, her first of the season with 2:10 remaining in the game. Sakwa and freshman Ana-Sophia Brande (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) tallied their second assists each on the season. Martell became the 13th different Mustang to record a goal this season.
Freshman goaltender Mackenzie Bruch (Hiram, Ga./Boston Shamrocks) had 31 saves and improved her record to 2-3 on the season. Bruch totaled 67 saves in the Codfish Bowl, a .957 save percentage, and was named to the All-Tournament Team for her efforts.
Stevenson looks to even their record at .500 when they return home Thursday, January 10 for the first of a two-game set against New England College. Game time is 1:00 p.m at Reisterstown Sportsplex.
