BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Stevenson women's ice hockey sophomore McKenzie Taggart (Centennial, Colo./Colorado Selects) scored her fourth goal of the season, but Sacred Heart had two second period tallies to lead the Division I Pioneers to a 3-1 victory Saturday afternoon at Wonderland of Ice.
The Mustangs (2-1), who held a 33-32 advantage in shots and totaled 16 penalty minutes, dropped their first game of the season after picking up their first two home wins in just their second season last weekend.
In a back-and-forth first period, the Pioneers (3-3) came away with a 1-0 lead after Erin Marley had a late tally off a deflection on assists from Catie Ladner and Emily Falvey.
Sacred Heart added two goals in the second period, the first coming just six seconds on the first power-play opportunity of the game. The Pioneers finished 1-for-5 on power play chances while the Mustangs were 1-for-3.
Taggart put Stevenson on the board with a power-play goal midway through the third period on an assist from sophomore Brooke Webber (Washington, Pa./Pittsburgh Elite).
The line of Taggart, sophomore Jessie Capanelli (Lancaster, Pa./West Chester Quakers) and sophomore Molly O'Neil (Aurora, Colo./Colorado Selects) have accounted for seven of the teams nine goals through three games this season.
Sophomore Sarah Modzelewski (Bloomington, Ind./Little Caesars) totaled 32 saves in her second start this season.
The Mustangs will host Sacred Heart on Friday, November 15, in their first of a two-game set against the Pioneers. Game time is 2:30 p.m. at Reisterstown Sportsplex.
