Mustangs Drop UCHC, MAC Opener Versus Manhattanville

REISTERSTOWN, Md. - The Stevenson women's ice hockey team took a 2-1 lead in the second period but Manhattanville answered with five straight goals to post a, 6-2, United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) victory Friday evening at Reisterstown Sportsplex.

  • The Valiants (1-0) fired the first four shots of the game in the opening two minutes with senior Caitie Darosa knocking them all aside. Stevenson answered with a pair of shots on net and another two shots blocked.
  • After the first whistle came after over five minutes of play, Daorsa came up with another three saves, including back-to-back stops on Amanda Sabia.
  • The Mustangs earned the first power play of the game after Manhattanville went to the box at the 10:50 mark for hooking. Just nine seconds into the player advantage, senior Cierra Siemasko put in a rebound on a shot from freshman Nikki Kendrick. Sophomore Casey Storck picked up the secondary assist.
  • Manhattanville went to the power play at the 12:12 mark after a pair of Mustangs and one Valiant were called for roughing penalties. The Valiants needed just 26 seconds as Tianna Lopes evened the game at 1-1.
  • Stevenson had a five-on-three for 1:48 but could not convert, putting just two shots on net. The Mustangs had another power play late in the period but Rose Pijaca came up with another pair of saves.

  • Darosa was tested early in the second period, coming up with a save in the opening 45 seconds of the period.
  • At 8:04 of the period, the Mustangs went on the power play and scored just 22 seconds into the player advantage as Kendrick found the back of the net for the second time this season. Storck and senior Kellen Wittman were credited with the assists.
  • Sabia leveled the game at 2-2 just 2:16 later on a power play goal. With 1:29 remaining in the second period, Janet Xu scored a power goal to give Manhattanville a 3-2 lead at the intermission.

  • Wittman recorded a pair of shots on net in the opening four minutes of the third but both were saved by Pijaca.
  • The Mustangs were whistled for too many players on the ice at 4:34 and Manhattanville converted on its fourth straight power play as Sabia netted her second of the game.
  • At the 8:36 mark, Zoey Pellowitz scored a three-on-five shorthanded goal to give the Valiants a 5-2 lead. Sabia scored an even strength goal with 3:20 remaining in regulation.

  • Manhattanville outshot Stevenson, 41-28, including 28-16 over the final two periods.
  • The Valiants finished 4-for-6 on the power play while the Mustangs were 2-for-10.
  • At the face-off dot, Manhattanville won 43 compared to 36 for the hosts. Siemasko finished 21-for-33.
  • Storck finished with two assists while Kendrick had one goal and one assists.
  • For Manhattanville, Pellowitz finished with one goal and five assists while Xu had one goal and four assists. Sabia recorded a hat trick, the first allowed by Stevenson since the 2013-14 season.
  • In net, Darosa finished with 27 saves before giving way to junior Annie Smyth-Hammond who stopped eight shots.
  • The win for the Valiants snaps a two-game losing streak to Stevenson, who won in last seasons UCHC quarterfinals.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, November 3 when the Mustangs host the second of a two-game series versus Manhattanville in both UCHC and MAC play. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
