Whirlwind First Half Propels Mustangs To Win

Swarthmore, PA - On a cold and windy night in Pennsylvania the Mustangs blew past the Swarthmore Garnet to record a 14-6 victory. The Mustangs overall record improves to 5-2 after back-to-back wins against non-conference opponents this week.
The game started with both teams adapting to the tough conditions. Swarthmore was first to get on the board with four minutes gone in the game but their only lead of the game wouldn't last long, as within 39 seconds the Mustangs responded with a goal from sophomore Kristina Hnizda (Manchester, MD/North Carroll). The Mustangs then grabbed their first lead of the game when they controlled the draw and scored 19 seconds later through senior Jamie Jones (Glen Burnie, MD/Glen Burnie).
Swarthmore rallied and tied the game up at 2-2 but that would be the last time the Garnet would draw level as the Mustangs scored 11 unanswered goals to finish out the first half 13-2 ahead. Senior Cat Connelly (Fallston, MD/Fallston) scored 4 goals and Jones hit the cage 3 times, with Lisa Baker (Westminster, MD/Westminster), Brittany Connelly (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville), Megan Weiss (Odenton, MD/Elizabeth Seton) and Tricia Kauffman (Cockeysville, MD/Dulaney) each adding a goal. The Mustangs were impressive in transition, as they shut down the Garnet offense and scored at will at the other end. The Mustangs recorded 25 shots, 9 draw controls and 8 ground balls in the opening period.
In the second half, the Mustangs started slow, allowing Swarthmore to creep back into the game. Swarthmore scored 4 goals to narrow the gap to 13-6 but that would be as close as they would come, as the Mustangs finished off the game with Connelly's 5th goal of the night to record a resounding 14-6 win.
Connelly led the attack with 5 goals and 1 assist, with Jones adding 4 goals and 1 assist for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs will be back in action next Wednesday when they travel to face conference rival York College.
