Mustangs Fall Short in Battle with Spartans

York, Pa - The Villa Julie College Women's Lacrosse Team battled hard against CAC rival the York College Spartans on a windy day in Pennsylvania. However, after an end to end game, the Spartans would prevail 16-12.
York were fast out of the blocks, scoring their first goal of the game with only 15 seconds played. For the next 15 minutes the game became a defensive stalemate, as both teams prevented any clear cut chances. York then scored their second but their lead did not last long as two goals within a minute from junior Julie Olson (Spofford, NH/Keene) and sophomore Kristina Hnizda (Manchester, MD/North Carroll) brought the Mustangs level. The Spartans regained the lead but once again they were pulled back by VJC when junior Mandi Carr (Crownsville, MD/Old Mill) scored her first goal of the game to make it 3-3.
The Spartans then took control, scoring 4 unanswered goals that forced the Mustangs to take a timeout to regroup. The Mustangs came out of the huddle fired up, and immediately responded by scoring two goals through freshmen Megan Weiss (Odenton, MD/Elizabeth Seton) and Lisa Baker (Westminster, MD/Westminster) to narrow the gap to two. York would score one more, but before the half would end, the Mustangs would head into the break only a goal down, with goals from senior Cat Connolly (Fallston, MD/Fallston) and sophomore Lauren Zegowitz (Gaithersburg, MD/Damascus) making the score 8-7.
The second half started the same as the first with York hitting the cage first to extend their lead. The York keeper then made two vital saves from Mustang shots to preserve their lead. Those saves proved important as the Spartan offense went up the other end and scored again to make it 10-7 with 5 minutes played in the second period. Weiss grabbed her second to close the gap but again the Spartan keeper continued to shine with two more stops. York scored three more goals before senior Jamie Jones (Glen Burnie, MD/Glen Burnie) hit back. York scored two more for a six goal lead before Hnizda hammered home her second of the day. York scored again to make it 16-10 with 13 minutes left in the game. The Mustangs never gave up and scored two more goals through Hnizda and sophomore Brittany Connolly (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville). In the end it was too late, as York held on for the 16-12 win.
The Mustangs were led offensively by Hnizda with 3 goals, followed by Weiss with 2 goals. The Mustangs outshot the Spartans 35-34, and on defense caused 8 turnovers to Yorks 4.
The Mustangs will be back in action on Saturday when they face off against CAC rival St. Mary's College at Owings Mills at 2pm. The Sports Information Department will be broadcasting live stats for this game and all the Mustang Lacrosse Home Games.
