Mustangs Scare Green Terror in OT

Westminster, MD - The Villa Julie College Women's Lacrosse Team traveled to face McDaniel College in a non-conference tilt. The Mustangs produced a resilient display to win in overtime, 13-12. Sophomore Lauren Zegowitz (Gaithersburg, MD/Damascus) scored the game winner for the Mustangs, hitting her sixth goal of the game with just over a minute remaining in the first overtime to lead VJC to victory.
The Mustangs started at a high pace, with Senior Cat Connelly (Fallston, MD/Fallston) opening the scoring after only 2:18 played in the first half. The Green Terror hit back scoring two back to back goals to grab their first and only lead of the game. Their only lead of the game would last just 1:51 as the Mustangs blazed past McDaniel with five unanswered goals to lead 6-2. Zegowitz grabbed three, with Kristina Hnizda (Manchester, MD/North Carroll) and Brittany Connelly (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville) each adding one. The Mustangs would continue to dominate the first half and finished out 8-5 leaders going into the break. Zegowitz added her fourth of the game and Ashley Cathcart (Reisterstown, MD/Franklin) added to the scoresheet.
The second half was a different story, as the Mustangs failed to capitalize on their first half dominance. Three unanswered goals from the Green Terror tied the game at 8-8 before the Mustangs broke the deadlock nearly 17 minutes into the second half. Cat Connelly was the goalscorer adding to her earlier strike. 2 minutes later McDaniel equalized, before the Mustangs regained the lead with Zegowitz scoring her fifth goal of the game. Cat Connelly finished up with a hat-trick to give the Mustangs a two goal advantage with just under 8 minutes remaining. McDaniel produced a stunning comeback, scoring two goals in the last three minutes to send the game to overtime.
With only 41 seconds played in overtime, Lisa Baker (Westminster, MD/Westminster) grabbed her first goal of the game to put the Mustangs back in charge. McDaniel responded, but the outstanding Zegowitz scored her sixth goal of the game to send the Mustangs back home with the win. The impressive defensive displays of Tricia Kauffman (Cockeysville, MD/Dulaney) and Brittany Hilton (Barnesville, MD/Poolesville) helped the Mustangs improve their record to 6-4. Freshman Goalie Devan Malone (Highland, MD/River Hill) recorded 8 saves in the win.
