Mustangs Reach New Heights On Senior Day
Owings Mills, MD - The Villa Julie Women's Lacrosse team celebrated their 4 seniors by producing an impressive performance in a dominating win over Susquehanna University. With the win, the Mustangs tied the school record for wins in a season and tied the most wins in a row. The Mustangs have now won 11 games, repeating the 1998 season, and are currently on a six game win streak which was previously recorded in 1997.
The Mustangs started out at a fast pace, recording 5 unanswered goals in the first 10 minutes of the game. Susquehanna bounced back but the Mustangs would continue to control the ball and finished out the first half with a 12-3 lead. The second half was much like the first, with Villa's potent offense hitting the cage and the defense stopping the Crusaders from getting back in the game. The game finished out with a 23-6 victory for the Stang's, leaving their overall record at 11-4.
Leading the way for the Mustangs was Lauren Zegowitz with 5, followed by Cat Connelly with 4, and Lisa Baker and Jamie Jones with 3 each. Lisa Baker recorded 3 assists in the win.
Mandi Carr was the team leader in draw controls with 9. Tricia Kauffman was a force on defense, causing 5 turnovers. In goal, Kait Brzozowski recorded 5 saves in the win.
Before the game the Mustangs honored their four seniors and families for their contibution to the college and to the Women's Lacrosse Program. Coach Railey had these kind words to say about the seniors:
Jamie Jones, Attack, Senior - Games Played: 30 Games Started: 30 Goals: 73 Assists: 14
"Jamie is an established attacker. She has a sixth sense of
where to be and how to move off the ball which has created some
real opportunities for us offensively. Jamie is hardworking
everyday and a pleasure to be around. We are very lucky to have her
for the two years that we did."
Kait Brzozowski, GK, Senior - Games Played: 43 Games Started: 37 Saves: 366
"Kait has been an integral part of our success over the past three years. She has selflessly played a position that was not her first choice, often coming up with big saves in competitive moments. She is a character on and off the field and will be sorely missed by both team and coaching staff."
Cat Connelly, Attack, Senior - Games Played: 56 Games Started: 51 Goals: 94 Assists: 42
"Cat's greatest contribution to our team has been behind the scenes in her leadership both on the field and off. She is an amazing role model, academically and athletically. Because Cat wanted this team to be successful, she worked very hard early on to mold the younger players into collegiate competitors. She has helped me enormously in guiding this team to new levels. She is irreplaceable."
Ashley Cathcart, Midfield, Senior - Games Played: 57 Games Started: 55 Goals: 40 Assists: 18 Groundballs: 113
"Ashley has been the anchor of consistent defensive play. She is the quintessential senior player, she shines so bright in the toughest moments of play and there is never a doubt of her commitment and effort. Her skill is tremendous and she has a wonderful competitive spirit. I have watched Ashley mature into one of the finest athletes I have coached over the last three years."
