Women's Lacrosse Upsets Elizabethtown College

Elizabethtown, PA - The Villa Julie Women's Lacrosse Team traveled to Pennsylvania to take on highly regarded Elizabethtown College who beat #16 the University of Mary Washington last week. The Mustangs produced a stunning display to upset the odds and come away with a 17-14 victory.
The Mustangs started slowly, going down 2-0 within the first two minutes of the game but they fought back with goals from Mandi Carr (Crownsville, MD/Old Mill) and Jamie Jones (Glen Burnie, MD/Glen Burnie) to tie the game at 2-2 with 5 minutes played.
Elizabethtown regained control and scored twice to go up 4-2 but once again the lead did not last long as Villa scored four answered goals from Lisa Baker (Westminster, MD/Westminster), Lauren Zegowitz (Gaithersburg, MD/Damascus) (2) and Kristina Hnizda (Manchester, MD/North Carroll) to lead 6-4 with 15:45 to play in the first. The Blue Jays scored again to cut the lead to one but the Mustangs caught fire again, scoring three goals from Cat Connelly (Fallston, MD/Fallston), Ashley Cathcart (Reisterstown, MD/Franklin) and Hnizda got her second of the game to lead 9-5. The Blue Jays pulled one back before the end of the half but entered the locker room 9-6 down to the Mustangs. VJC picked up 11 groundballs to the Blue Jays 8 and goalie Kaitlin Brzozowski (Bel Air, MD/Fallston) kept the Mustangs ahead with 6 saves.
The second half started at a frantic pace with both teams trading goals within the first 10 minutes. First Elizabethtown cut the lead to two, before Julie Olson (Spofford, NH/Keene) scored her first goal of the game to open the gap. The Blue Jays responded by closing the gap but again the Mustangs kept the three goal lead with Cat Connelly's second goal of the game to lead 11-8 with 22 minutes left to play. Olson grabbed her second of the day to open up a four goal lead for the Mustangs but within a minute Elizabethtown pulled it back to 12-9. Cat Connelly completed her hat-trick to send the Mustangs up by four but the Blue Jays do not go down without a fight, scoring again within a minute of the Mustang goal to close the gap to three.
With 16 minutes remaining Jones added her second but again the Blue Jays responded to keep the gap at three. Baker made it 15-11 but two goals from Elizabethtown closed the gap to two with 10 minutes to go. The Mustangs would score two more from Brittany Connelly (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville) and Baker with Elizabethtown only scoring one to end the game 17-14 in favor of the Mustangs for a dramatic upset.
Leading the Mustangs was Lisa Baker with 3 goals and 3 assists. Cat Connelly added 3 goals and Hnizda, Zegowitz, Olson and Jones each hit the cage twice. Defensively, Brittany Hilton (Barnesville, MD/Poolesville) led the way with 2 caused turnovers and Tricia Kauffman (Cockeysville, MD/Dulaney) and Ashley Cathcart played outstanding defense to halt the Blue Jays. Goalie Brzozowski finished with 13 saves to preserve the win.
The Mustangs have little rest as they travel on Thursday to take on Swarthmore College at 6:30pm.
