CLAREMONT, Cal. - Stevenson women's lacrosse junior Marissa Meiklejohn (Severn, Md./Old Mill) scored three goals, including the game-winner, to propel the Mustangs to a 10-8 victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Wednesday at Zinda Field.
The Mustangs (3-1) never trailed in the game and scored the first four goals, including two by sophomore Amanda LeGar (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty). LeGar also had three ground balls and four draw controls.
However, the Athenas (3-5), would close the first half on a 4-1 run, to cut the deficit to one.
With the score tied 6-6 midway through the second half, sophomore Kathryn Merrick (Bel Air, Md./Forest Hill) would score two straight goals to give Stevenson the lead for good. She would also total three ground balls.
Stevenson is 2-0 this season when they score first. The last time they lost when scoring first was back on April 28, 2011 against Elizabethtown.
After Meiklejohn's third goal, which proved to be the game winner at the 9:59 mark, the Athenas' Izzy Laterzo's free-position goal pulled the home team within one with just under eight minutes left. But the defense led by sophomore Leanne Bittner (Baltimore,MD./Loch Raven) who finished with nine saves, kept Claremont scoreless for the rest of the game.
Junior Mandy Marston (Baltimore, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) would score an insurance goal for the Mustangs with 5:24 left to play.
The game was statistically even as both teams finished with 24 shots and eight draw controls. Claremont held a 17-14 advantage in ground balls.
Madi Shove led the Athenas with two goals and two assists.
Stevenson concludes its two-game California road trip Friday when they face Occidental at 4:00 p.m., Eastern time.
