OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson women's lacrosse freshman Olivia Monteiro totaled her first career points with a goal and an assist as junior Kathryn Merrick totaled five points on four goals and one assist as the Mustangs fell to Brockport State in the Stevenson Classic on Saturday at Mustang Stadium.
The Mustangs (0-3) dropped their third-straight game to open the season after dropping games to the 2011 National Champions and No. 6 Gettysburg and the defending National Champions and No. 1 Salisbury. Brockport is receiving votes in the preseason poll.
Following a goal by Emily Zartman, the Mustangs scored back-to-back goals to take a two-goal advantage before the Golden Eagles (1-1) scored the final two goals of the half to tie the game at six going into the break.
Monteiro tallied her first career goal 5:31 into the second half to give Stevenson an 8-7 lead but Brockport scored four of the final five goals as the Mustangs scored just one goal over the final 24:29.
Merrick totaled her fifth five-point game in her career while also totaling six draw controls, three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Sophomore Carli Bafford totaled a game-high five ground balls.
The Golden Eagles were led by Zartman who finished with four goals.
Brockport was 5-for-11 on free position shots while the Mustangs were 2-for-5. Stevenson was whistled for 40 fouls compared to 21 for the Golden Eagles.
Junior Leanne Bittner finished with a season-high 10 goals while her counterpart Remle Harr also totaled 10.
Stevenson returns to action tomorrow, Sunday, March 2 when they host No. 20 Fredonia State in the Stevenson Classic beginning at 3:00 p.m.
