Villa Julie 3, Notre Dame 1 in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament

Owings Mills, MD- Villa Julie (15-7) scored three second half goals to take a 3-1 victory over Notre Dame (Md.) (8-8-3) in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship Tournament. It was only the second trip to the NCAA tournament for the Mustangs' women's soccer team. In 2000 Villa made an impressive run to the Sweet 16.
Notre Dame jumped on the board first when Stephani Jones (Chesapeake Beach, MD / Calvert) danced around several defenders and finished her fast break at 24:42. The Gators carried the lead for the next 40 minutes.
Villa finally answered early in the 65th minute when Jackie Hoffman (Baltimore, MD / Catholic) beat a sprawling Courtney Zgraggen (Ellicott City, MD / Mt. Hebron) with a shot that squeaked just inside of the left post. 5:22 later, Tonia Cristino (Lancaster, PA / Hempfield) tallied her 15th goal of the season punching a shot in off of the left post.
It was Cristino's sixth game-winning goal of the 2006 campaign.
After being out-shot 8-4 in the first half, Villa Julie's offense broke out of a game-and-a-half rut firing 14 second half shots at the Gators' cage. Notre Dame was only able to muster four shots in the second half. The Mustangs' also finished the game with an 11-4 edge in corner kicks.
Zgraggen, overworked in the second-half, came up with eight saves in the game, seven in the second-half. Villa's Casey Brown (Barnesville, MD / Poolesville) stopped eight shots as well. Five of her saves came in the first half.
Besides her game-tying goal that ended a 159-minute, 50-second Villa drought, Hoffman assisted on the Mustangs' insurance marker in the 83rd minute. Her cross found the waiting forehead of Laura Robinson (Westminster, MD / Westminster) who put the ball just out of reach of a challenging Zgraggen to make it the final 3-1 score.
With the win, Villa Julie improved its season mark to 15-7, while Notre Dame fell to 8-8-3. Villa returns to the pitch on Sunday at The College of New Jersey. The Mustangs and the Lions will face-off at 1:00 p.m. in Ewing, NJ.
