Mustangs Tie Mary Washington, Finish Third in CAC

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Stevenson University women's soccer sophomore Allison Humphries (Bel Air/John Carroll) scored on a penalty kick in the 48th minute to tie the game at 1-1 as the Mustangs earned an important draw against Mary Washington on Saturday at the Battleground.
The tie assured Stevenson (11-5-3, 5-1-2 CAC) of the No. 3-seed in next week's CAC Women's Soccer Championship after Salisbury edged first place St. Mary's (Md.) 1-0 on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the tie was the fifth of the season for the Eagles (7-5-5, 3-1-3 CAC), including third in conference play, who will be the No. 4-seed in the conference tournament.
Humphries' goal was her fourth of the season and the second penalty kick goal for the Mustangs this season. The other one came back on August 31 when freshman Samantha Novy (Severna Park/Severna Park) converted in the 46th minute of a 2-1 loss at Alvernia in the championship game of the Crusader Cup.
Amy Olson put Mary Washington on the board in the 22nd minute after she scored off a rebound following a save by Mustang freshman Brittany Ross (Millersville/Severna Park).
Stevenson, who lost 3-0 to the Eagles a year ago, was outshot 8-3 in the first half before holding a 7-2 advantage in the second. In the first overtime, Ross made two saves to keep the Mustangs alive after they were edged 4-1 in shots.
Ross finished the game with nine saves, her second-highest total of the season and three short of her career-high set at St. Mary's (Md.) on October 11.
Having concluded the regular season, Stevenson will have six days to prepare for the sixth-seed in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament. The Mustangs' opponent will either be Mary Washington or Hood, pending the outcome of Wednesday's game between the two schools.
The quarterfinal contest will take place in Owings Mills next Saturday, November 1. Game time is still undecided.
