Stevenson to Host Three CAC Championship Games
OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Five of Stevenson University's athletic teams will compete for a conference championship over the next four days, three of which will be doing so at home, beginning with the women's soccer team on Saturday.
Saturday will feature three Mustang teams in action as the men's and women's cross country teams will head to Thornburg, Virginia on Saturday to compete in the 2008 CAC Cross Country Championships.
The men's championship race begins at 11 a.m., followed by the women's chase at noon. For more information, click here. Salisbury is the three-time defending men's champion while Mary Washington captured the women's top honors in 2007.
Also on Saturday, the women's soccer team, the No. 3 seed in the CAC Women's Soccer Championship, will host sixth-seeded Hood in a quarterfinal contest on the Owings Mills campus beginning at 1:00 p.m.
The Mustangs (11-5-3), who have won at least 10 games for the sixth time in 15 total seasons, finished the regular season unbeaten in their last four games. After a 1-0 victory at fifth-seeded and defending CAC champion York (Pa.) on October 21, Stevenson battled No. 4 seed Mary Washington to a 1-1 tie on October 25.
Stevenson earned the No. 3 seed with a 5-1-1 CAC record a year after being the seventh seed with a 3-5 conference record.
The Mustangs will be looking for their first conference championship since 2006 when they won the North Eastern Athletic Conference. Four different teams have each won a CAC women's soccer title in the last four years.
Earlier this season, sophomore Allison Humphries (Bel Air/John Carroll) had a goal and an assist as the Mustangs handed Hood a 2-0 loss at home on October 7.
If Stevenson wins on Saturday, it will travel to No. 2 seed St. Mary's (Md.) on Tuesday, November 4 in the semifinals. Game time will be 2:30 p.m. The championship will be played next Saturday, November 8.
In the other half of the bracket on Saturday, York will host Mary Washington with the winner traveling to top-seeded Salisbury Tuesday.
On Sunday, the fourth-seeded Stevenson field hockey team will host No. 5 seed Wesley at 1:00 p.m., at the Caves Complex in Owings Mills. The Mustangs (9-9) tied a school record for wins in a season with a 1-0 victory at Frostburg State on Thursday.
After scoring two goals in the first 10 minutes of the game, the Wolverines handed Stevenson a 2-1 loss back on October 7. However, the Mustangs have won three of their last four games since then and are hoping that their 7-4 record at home can help them be the first team in school history to post double digit wins.
Stevenson's only loss since then came to Salisbury on October 21, 3-1. The Mustangs scored one only two goals allowed by the Sea Gulls in six conference games and with a win against Wesley, they will get a rematch against the No. 9-ranked and 13-time defending CAC champion Sea Gulls next Wednesday, November 5.
On the other side, sixth-seeded York (Pa.) will visit No. 3-seed Mary Washington on Sunday with the winner advancing to Wednesday's semifinal match at second-seeded St. Mary's (Md.). The championship game will be next Saturday, November 8.
In addition to a possible women's soccer semifinal game at St. Mary's (Md.) on Tuesday, the third-seeded Stevenson women's volleyball team will open its bid for a CAC championship when it hosts sixth-seeded York (Pa.) at Student Union Gymnasium on the Greenspring campus at 7:00 p.m.
The Mustangs (27-6) have three more matches on Saturday in a home quad match, but they earned the third seed after posting a school record 27 wins this season after tying the school record with 21 and earning the sixth seed a year ago.
With a win, Stevenson will travel to second-seed St. Mary's (Md.) on Thursday, November 6 for the semifinals. The championship will then be on Saturday, November 8.
The other quarterfinal contest on Tuesday will be fifth-seeded Gallaudet at fourth-seeded Mary Washington with the winner traveling to top-seeded and defending CAC champion Salisbury on Thursday.
