Women's Soccer Nearly Upsets No. 12 Virginia Wesleyan

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - For the second-straight game against an ODAC opponent, Stevenson battled through a scoreless regulation, but this time, No. 12-ranked Virginia Wesleyan managed to escape with a 1-0 overtime victory Saturday in the Orthopaedic Associates of Virginia Classic.
In their season opener on Tuesday, the Mustangs (0-1-1) battled Bridgewater (Va.) to a scoreless tie in double overtime at home.
For the Marlins (2-0), Saturday's win was their second in as many games against a team from the CAC after they knocked off Salisbury on the road Wednesday, 1-0.
Despite being outshot 21-8 over the first 90 minutes and being held without a corner kick, Stevenson was able to stay close thanks to the play of freshman Lauren Weitzman (Westminster/Winters Mill) who totaled seven saves.
The Mustangs had an opportunity to upset the Marlins in the first overtime when junior Allison Humphries (Bel Air/John Carroll) had two shots, but the first was blocked and the second went wide.
Just a few minutes later, Virginia Wesleyan senior Nicki Mazzoccone would score her first career game-winner when she converted a pass from Courtney Whorten to keep the Marlins unbeaten.
Meanwhile, Allison Lennox made three saves to earn her 11th career shutout and second in as many games this season.
Stevenson will look for its first win and first goal on Sunday when it faces Christopher Newport at 2:00 p.m.
