Mustangs Edge Christopher Newport For First Win, 1-0

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Sophomore Brittany Ross (Millersville/Severna Park) totaled a career-high 14 saves and freshman Melinda Kane (Baltimore/Mercy) scored the team's first goal of the season as Stevenson earned a 1-0 victory over Christopher Newport Sunday at Virginia Wesleyan in the Orthopaedic Associates of Virginia Classic.
With the win, the Mustangs (1-1-1) remained unbeaten in its last four regular-season road games dating back to last season.
For Ross, it was her eighth career shutout and the team's 10th in 19 games in which she has started, including second this season. In the season opener, she played the first 45 minutes of a scoreless tie against Bridgewater (Va.).
A two-time CAC Player of the Week selection a year ago, Ross ranked third in the CAC in saves last season and second in saves percentage. Her previous career-high in saves was 12 in a 3-0 loss at St. Mary's (Md.) on Oct. 11, 2008.
As a team, Stevenson has posted nine shutouts in its last 16 games, allowing just 12 goals during that time.
Ross totaled nine of her 14 saves in the second half against 12 shots with six of those saves coming in the final 26 minutes after Kane staked the Mustangs to a 1-0 lead.
Despite being outshot 25-8 and held without a corner for the second-straight game, the Mustangs scored the game's only goal when Kane scored on a left-footed strike from 10 yards out on an assist from sophomore Stephanie Eyler (Thurmont/Catoctin).
Dineen Sampson had three saves for the Captains (0-3).
Stevenson travels to local rival McDaniel on Wednesday.
