Mustangs Fall at Messiah in Conference Championship, Await NCAA Selections

GRANTHAM, Pa. - Led by a second half goal from Alicia Frey, the No. 9-ranked Messiah women's soccer team won its seventh-straight Commonwealth Conference championship with a 1-0 victory over Stevenson Sunday at Shoemaker field.

Stevenson (13-8-1), who was making its fourth conference championship appearance in the last five years, and second in as many seasons in the Commonwealth Conference, will now await the selection show for the 2013 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship to see if it will be making its fourth NCAA tournament appearance in program history and second in the last four years.

The Mustangs were ranked seventh in this week's NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Poll. Seven of their eight losses this season have been to ranked opponents.

Meanwhile, Messiah (18-2-1), the two-time defending national champions, will be making its 14th consecutive appearance in the NCAA tournament as recipients of the Commonwealth Conference automatic bid to the 2013 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship.

The Mustangs pushed all of their players in the Falcons' attacking third for the entire first-half, and forced Messiah to change their strategy after limiting them to just six first half shots.

Stevenson's only shot of the first half was a golden one as senior Shannon McGuire sent a long kick into the box for freshman Alexis Siejack who attempted to head it past goalkeeper Audra Larson, but just missed it by inches as it landed in the keepers hands.

Frey scored the lone goal of the game 2:04 into the second half after a long chip into the box for a one-timer to lead the Falcons to its 13th Commonwealth Conference title in the last 14 years. The team's only loss came to Elizabethtown in 2006.

The Falcons outshot Stevenson 12-6, including 6-1 in the first half, while also holding a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Sophomore Alicia Greene finished with three saves in just her second loss in six consecutive start.

The loss also ended a streak of four consecutive wins for the Mustangs who were in a must-win situation for the final three games of the season to advance to the conference tournament.
