Mustangs Take 3rd at NEAC Tournament

Purchase, NY.-

This weekend the women's tennis team traveled to SUNY Purchase to compete in the NEAC tournament. The tournament was scheduled to be a two-day event taking place on Friday and Saturday. Due to a 100% chance of rain on Saturday, the tournament needed to be shortened to a one-day event, which meant the majority of the team would have to play six matches in one day. Also, the singles scoring was changed to play the third set as a super tie-breaker and the consolation draw was cancelled.

The first event of the day was the doubles matches.  VJC had high hopes for good results as they held two of the #1 seeds with Meghan Laschinger (Lutherville, MD/Notre Dame) and Samm Rasnake (Perry Point, MD/Northeast) at #2 doubles and Lauren Humphries (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) and Molly Hurman (Pasadena, MD/Chesapeake) at #3 doubles. The #1 doubles team of Tory Allinson (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll)and Barb Hnizda (Manchester, MD/North Carroll) got off to a good start by defeating their opponents from Purchase 8-3.

In the second round they ran into the #1 seed from PSU-Berks and despite a great start, they fell 8-5. In the third place match they were overmatched by the team from Baptist Bible 8-0. At #2 doubles Laschinger and Rasnake got off to a great start by upholding their #1 seed by defeating the #8 seed from Keystone 8-2. Then in the semi-finals they continued in their winning ways by defeating the team from Purchase 8-4. In the finals they had a tough match against PSU-Berks falling 8-3.

At #3 doubles, Humphries and Hurman got off to a great start by beating Baptist Bible 8-1. In the semi-finals they ran into a tough Bard team, and despite leading early, they fell 9-7. In the third place match they dominated Philadelphia Bible 8-2 to take home some valuable points for the team standings.

Next was singles matches and the Mustangs had a few tough first round matches. At #1 singles Tory Allinson was the #4 seed and she fell to the #5 seed from Bard 6-1, 6-0. Playing at #2 singles for VJC was Barb Hnizda and she was seeded #5. In her first round match she toughed out a 7-6(6), 1-6, 10-3 win against the #4 seed from PBU. In the semi-finals the long day started to catch up with Hnizdaas she was defeated by the #1 seed from Baptist Bible. She also lost her third place match 6-2, 6-2 to her opponent from Purchase giving her fourth place at #2 singles.

At #3 singles Meghan Laschinger was seeded second and drew the #7 seed from Bard. Laschingercame into the tournament with a sprained MCL in her right knee but was playing through the pain. However, after 3 doubles matches her knee was really limiting her movement and she couldn't overcome the consistency of her opponent and she lost 4-6, 6-4, 10-8.

At #4 singles Samm Rasnake was seeded first thanks to her undefeated conference record in the regular season. She started off great beating her Baptist Bible foe 6-2, 6-2. She then kept on rolling by defeating Keystone in the semi-finals. Rasnake was the first player from VJC to make it to the finals; however, her final match wasn't played until late in the day. Unfortunately the rain had begun to move in and forced her match to be called. Rasnake was declared co-champions with her opponent from Bard.

At #5 singles Molly Hurman was in the same boat as Rasnake. She was seeded #1 because she was undefeated in conference during the regular season. She ran through her first round match against Keystone 6-0, 6-0. In the second round her wrist began to hurt her badly and she grinded out a win against her opponent from Chestnut Hill. In the finals she went up against the #2 seed from PSU-Berks. Again the weather reared its ugly head and Hurman's match was forced to be cancelled and she was declared co-champion as well.

At #6 singles Paulina Markkula (Rising Sun, MD/Tome School) was seeded #4 and was matched up against the #5 seed from Chestnut Hill. In the regular season Markkulabeat her opponent in a third set tie-breaker but today her opponent reversed the result and she was defeated 6-4, 6-1.

After a long day of tennis the women's team ended up third out of eight teams in the tournament with Samm Rasnake and Molly Hurman being named co-champions of their singles flights. PSU-Berks ended up with first place, while Bard finished second. PSU-Berks coach, Scott Yarnell, was named Coach of the year and Baptist Bible's Nicole Douglas was named played of the year. This concludes the women's tennis fall season although they do have a short spring season with a couple matches already scheduled.
