Mustangs Match CAC's Best in First Season

Stevenson, MD - The Mustangs completed their 1st season with new Head Coach Dave Trumbo at the helm in stellar fashion, posting a 21-11 record. Coach Trumbo was very pleased with the work ethic and team chemistry as he starts to build a volleyball program that will consistently compete against the top teams in the country. The highlights of the season for the Mustangs were advancing to the finals of the Haverford Invitational, victory over Frostburg in a 5 game thriller, and establishing themselves in the very competitive Capital Athletic Conference with wins over Marymount, Wesley and Hood.

Coach Trumbo was hired in January 2007 and with a very short recruiting time frame was able to attract some top level athletes for the 2007 recruiting class. He looks to continue that trend with another excellent class in 2008. This season the squad was led by many of those recruits. Two time Junior College All-American Alana Eller was 8th in the conference in kills per game and was Villager Player of the week and CAC Honorable Mention Player of the week on several occasions.  Setter Brittany Umetin, an All-Conference Division II transfer, was selected to the All-tournament team at the Haverford Invitational and was also selected CAC Honorable Mention Player of the week.  Brittany, a team captain, was fourth in the conference in assists with an average of over 10 assists a game. Freshman All-Metro performer Dani Katsampis posted an impressive .268 kill % while being versatile enough to play all three of the front row positions. All-Carroll County freshman middle blocker Alex Mercer was fourth in blocking in conference play and averaged 2.54 kills per game.

Senior right side hitter and captain Christy Calahan, overcame mid-season illness to provide leadership and a solid right attack. Last season's top hitter, sophomore Marisa Bender, posted impressive numbers from the outside (2.98 kills per game) until an ankle injury ended her season in early October. Junior Captain and Libero Julie Olson, led the team in digs, which placed her 11th in the conference. Julie provided the much needed leadership to a squad that returned only 5 players from the previous season.  Junior Shelly May continued to improve and posted double digit kills and a .833 kill % versus Montclair State. Junior Jess Smiley led the conference in aces and consistently gave the Mustangs a lift according to Coach Trumbo. Returning sophomore Katie Benham, and sophomores Jen Schissler and Jen Schaeffer provided excellent depth as all started as Defensive Specialists at some point during the season.

Freshman Lindsay Stiepler also started at Defensive Specialist and provide depth at the setting position contributing 24 assists against Averett. Freshman Brianna Voorhees provided depth in the front row, contributing 4 blocks against Salisbury.
