Carney Leads Women's Volleyball to 15th-Straight Win

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Filling in for senior Alana Eller (Ellicott City/Centennial), Stevenson University women's volleyball freshman Alexa Carney (Towson/Towson) totaled 12 kill, 20 digs and nine service aces to lead the Mustangs to wins over Washington (Md.) and Baruch Saturday on day one at the Baruch Invitational.

Stevenson (15-0) continues to add to its school record win streak as the team defeated Washington 26-24, 25-16, 25-15 before handing host Baruch a 23-25, 25-12, 25-11, 25-19 defeat to extend its regular-season win streak to 22, dating back to last season.

Eller, who is ranked third in the CAC in kills per game, is resting an injury suffered at Gallaudet on Tuesday, allowing Carney to step in an contribute. Against Washington, Carney tied a career-high with seven kills while also adding seven digs. Earlier this season, she had seven kills and 12 digs against Cedar Crest on September 6.

Sophomore Alex Mercer (Eldersburg/Liberty) totaled a team-high 12 along with four total blocks while junior Brittany Umetin (Havre de Grace/Mt. Zion) had a stellar all-around game with three kills, 27 assists, four service aces and six digs.

Freshman Paige Norvell (Newark, Del./St. Elizabeth) also had three kills and six digs against the Shorewomen and freshman Amy Rudolph (Northeast/Rising Sun) had eight digs, three shy of her career-high.

Against Baruch, Mercer totaled 10 or more kills for the third-straight game, adding 13 to go along with six more blocks. In two games Saturday, she led the team with 25 kills and 10 blocks.

Meanwhile, Carney totaled five kills, six service aces and a career-high 13 digs and Norvell added six kills and three service aces.

Freshman Jen Glock (Westminster/Westminster) had seven kills, one short of her career-high set versus Notre Dame (Md.) on September 4. Rudolph and junior Danielle Helwig (Ellicott City/Howard) each totaled nine digs.

The Mustangs will look to capture its second tournament championship this season when they face Colby-Sawyer and Cabrini at 10:00 a.m., and noon on Sunday. Colby-Sawyer is also 2-0 after straight-set wins over Cabrini and Washington. The winner will likely take home the title of the inaugural Baruch Invitational if it can win its second match at noon.
